Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the cells in the ovarian follicles. The level of AMH in your blood can tell you about the quantity and quality of eggs remaining in the ovaries. Measuring your AMH levels with a blood test can help assess your reproductive health and guide fertility treatment options.
Why take an AMH blood test?
AMH tests are generally used, alongside other tests, to make decisions about treating women with fertility issues, and can help to:
- Check how many eggs you have left: AMH tests can tell you the size of your ovarian reserve, but not how healthy your eggs are or if you’ll be able to get pregnant.
- Predict how you may respond to fertility medicine: Testing your AMH level may help guide what dose of fertility medicine you may need to get the best response.
- Help diagnose and monitor problems with the ovaries: These could include hormonal disorders.
What do AMH levels mean?
AMH levels usually peak when you’re in your mid-20s and then naturally decline as you age, so it’s normal to see a lower ovarian reserve in your 30s, 40s and 50s. They’re measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), and there is some debate about how to define average AMH levels, but here are some general examples:
- Average: Between 1.0 ng/mL to 3.0 ng/mL.
- Low: Under 1.0 ng/mL.
- Very low: 0.4 ng/mL.
Low AMH levels usually highlight a diminished ovarian reserve, which may mean you have a lower number of eggs available for fertilisation. This can make it more difficult, although not impossible, to conceive spontaneously.
Whereas, high AMH levels suggest that you may have a greater volume of eggs to be fertilised and better response to fertility treatments, like IVF.
