Factors impacting male fertility

Contrary to what some people still think, fertility isn’t only a women’s issue. Approximately a third of fertility issues within heterosexual couples are due to male fertility. Here, we’ll explore some of the factors that can negatively impact male fertility.

In this article:

Smoking

You likely already know some of the negative effects smoking can have on your health. But did you realise the toll it can have on male fertility?

In 2016, European Urology published a study that found smoking could be associated with decreased sperm count and motility, and poor sperm morphology (shape). The study also stated that negative effects of smoking on fertility were more likely to be felt by moderate to heavy smokers.

Tight Clothing

Tight-fitting underwear, like briefs, cause the testicles to warm up. While looser clothing is cooler.

Sperm production is sensitive to temperatures of 34C and above, so wearing tighter and hotter underwear could result in a lower quantity. Switching to looser-fitting underwear, like boxer shorts, is a relatively hassle-free step you can take to try and improve your sperm count.

Stress

Studies have shown that stress can decrease testosterone, and lower sperm count and motility. Stress affects everyone differently, and a small, manageable amount isn’t out of the ordinary. However, if you feel overwhelmed by pressure, it can impact not only your fertility but your overall health as well.

Mobile Phone Radiation

For years, researchers have explored the effects of mobile phone radiation on male fertility. Sperm can be damaged by exposure radiation from your mobile phone, especially if it’s near the testes.  A recent study by Korean scientists linked high exposure to mobile phone radiofrequency radiation to a decline in sperm quality.

Nutrition

You may be able to optimise your fertility by improving your diet. All this may mean is ensuring you stick to a balanced diet and cutting out sugary snacks with little nutritional value. Vitamins that can benefit male fertility include Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.
