How to manage the stress of IVF treatment

As you begin your IVF journey, it’s natural to feel out of your comfort zone. IVF treatment is complex and filled with emotional and physical stressors. However, there are some steps you can take to alleviate IVF-induced stress.

Here we look at recognising some of the signs of stress, how to manage it, and how we aim to simplify the IVF process.

What is stress?

Stress is your body’s reaction to feeling under pressure and can be caused by many different situations or life events. Everyone experiences stress to some level, whether individually, or as part of a group or community.

At times of stress, your body releases adrenaline, which gives it a boost to react to events quickly. This means a little stress can make you feel energised to act to complete a task. Your adrenaline usually returns to normal once the stressful event is over.

However, too much stress can harm your mental and physical health. It can affect your mood, behaviour, and social interactions.

How to recognise stress

Many factors can cause stress, such as pressures at work, financial worries, or relationship issues. Even positive events like moving house or preparing for a holiday can be triggering, so the complexity of planning a family is unlikely to be stress-free.

Knowing how to manage stress can make a big difference to your well-being, but first, you need to be aware of how to recognise it. Some common signs of stress include:

  • Feeling anxious or worried
  • Headaches, and other aches and pains
  • Eating more or less
  • Being irritable, angry, or tearful
  • Exhaustion or trouble sleeping
  • Drinking or smoking more often
  • Low energy
  • Procrastination
  • Nausea
  • Avoiding others
  • Forgetfulness
  • Skin irritations

Stress and IVF treatment

IVF can be an overwhelming experience, and many patients worry that stress and anxiety will impact their chances of conceiving. Finding a clinic that best suits your needs, organising medication, booking consultations, and affording the process can all add to the pressure surrounding your treatment.

Addressing and managing potential points of stress you may come across on your IVF journey can help to put your mind at ease and make the process easier to navigate. Here is a non-exhaustive list of tips to help you manage the stress of IVF treatment:

  • Gather information, so you can plan for your journey in advance and make informed decisions along the way.
  • Make a financial plan so that you can spread the costs of your IVF treatment comfortable and sustainably.
  • Reach out and talk to others who have gone through IVF. This can help to build confidence and feel less alone.
  • Set boundaries to ensure you’re comfortable with how your treatment is progressing. Be open about your expectations, and any additional support you may need.
  • Take time to focus on your well-being. Treat yourself and do things you enjoy.
  • Identify what you can control and what you can’t.
