A typical household in the UK spends over £2,500 each month, but in the run up to Christmas, budgets tend to go out of the window, and this figure increases by around £800.

What will you need to spend?
Before you start your Christmas budget, work out what you will need to spend on your IVF. If you haven’t already, do your research about which clinic you want to have your treatment with. Look at the cost of treatment, talk to the coordinators and discuss the prices of additional tests and medication. Look at statistics and make a mental note of the fact that an IVF cycle rarely works the first time around. So how much will you need? How much can you afford? Make sure you gather as many answers to your questions as you can.

Alternative Christmas activities
Once you have an idea of what you can or cannot afford, write a list of those close to you that you want to celebrate Christmas with. If you are close to starting treatment, the chances are you are eating well and cutting down on your alcohol intake. This lifestyle change will automatically take some pressure off your wallet, especially as the average glass of wine in London is £8!! Scandalous!!
As an alternative to a boozy Christmas Eve in your local pub, why not wrap up warm and go for a lovely walk through your town or local village to look at the Christmas lights, then stop in for just one glass before home? (Just one!) Or, if you enjoy singing, why not go old skool and go carolling! If you’d rather stay warm and cosy, perhaps indulge in an epic hot chocolate with all the trimmings and stick on your favourite Christmas movie?
We always suggest giving gifts that actually mean something rather than gifts that cost money. If you are telling your family and friends about your plans for treatment, why not be honest with them and explain that this year you are giving gifts that mean something rather than costing a fortune so that you can focus on the future.
We heard from a couple recently who gave each of their family members a gratitude jar each. We thought it was such a beautiful idea, not because it costs so little to make, but because acknowledging thanks for the things you have in life is a coping technique that is often used by men and women going through fertility treatment. (https://positivepsychology.com/neuroscience-of-gratitude/) It is suggested that you write down a list of all the things you love about your life, whether it be your home, your partner, a picture on your wall, the lasagne your mum makes or the view from the top of your favourite hill. Give your loved ones a little jar, a pack of post it notes and a pen. The aim of the jar is to pop a note of gratitude in to the jar everyday. Why not gift yourself one too?
Look after yourself
The Christmas period can be a very stressful time, especially when all you can think about is having a baby whilst everyone else around you is polishing off the Baileys. Don’t let anyone pressure you into doing anything you don’t want to, or spending money you don’t have. If you and your partner want to bunker down and simply get through this holiday with your wallet still in tact, then do it. Focus on the future. Focus on you.
